Many modern devices have a special button with a fingerprint sensor. This solution is often used by Apple in the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, although other manufacturers are also. This button is very convenient because it allows you to unlock the device, make a payment, confirm the password, and much more. Problems only start when a part is damaged and a passcode has to be used. In this article, I will briefly talk about the sensor’s operation principle and its replacement.

How does Touch ID technology work?

The name “Touch” speaks for itself. In other words, a sensor is built into the button that reads the fingerprint and transmits it to a special chip that matches the data. If the owner is confirmed, the function is triggered.

Interestingly, most people have an erroneous opinion about the principle of the key. It contains only a sensor (sensor), while all calculations take place in a completely different place – on the motherboard of a computer, phone, or tablet. This means that the board and the button are inextricably linked, if you try to replace one of the components, Touch ID will stop working.

Replacing the Touch ID button

Now about the most important thing. Can the touch button be replaced if it stops working? Not so simple. By default, the manufacturer does not provide such a procedure. That is, if the button is already broken, it is impossible to restore it. However, there are no hopeless situations. I will provide several solutions:

Enable AssistiveTouch on iPhone, and iPad. This is a useful function of activating a virtual button on the screen, which can do everything except fingerprint reading. To turn it on, go to “Settings” – “Accessibility” – “Touch” – “Turn on AssistiveTouch”.
Replace the button with a non-original one. Again, all functions will work except for Touch ID.
Button cable replacement. In a professional service, they may try to restore the connector if the cable is burnt out or broken (this happens most often). To do this, a piece of the loop is cut off and another one is soldered onto it. If the work is done qualitatively, Touch ID will work again. But if the button electronics itself is damaged, unfortunately, the repair is impossible.
Programming in the official service. This method doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try. In the official service center, you can install a new button and programmatically connect it to the system board. But keep in mind that such work has a rather high cost.

In fact, this is a ring around the dial with printed numbers, which can turn around its axis. There are varieties of both unidirectional rotation and bidirectional rotation. If you previously thought this was some kind of decorative element, then this is not. In fact, a bezel is a very useful feature, especially for tactical equipment for the military, tourists, and divers. Today I will tell you how to unleash its full potential.

What is the bezel on a watch for?

So, a brief historical background. It is believed that for the first time such a detail appeared on the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch, which was developed for the French special services. But the world-famous manufacturer Rolex made the bezel truly massive, with its legendary model Submariner (1953).

What is a bezel and what is it for? The answer is brilliantly simple. Initially, this element was intended for scuba divers, who needed to track the time of the dive and, accordingly, the remaining oxygen in the cylinder. Subsequently, the functionality found application in other areas.

Now about the most important thing. If your “chronograph” has a bezel, you need to learn how to use it. Moreover, there is nothing complicated in this. Take a close look at the printed numbers on the rim. As a rule, this is a scale with an equal breakdown from 0 to 60. Sometimes “zero” will be replaced by the number “sixty”, which indicates the beginning and end of the cycle. These intervals represent minutes.

To start measuring time, you need to turn the bezel so that the “0” symbol coincides with the minute hand. In this way, the hand will move along the dial, and by referring to the numbers on the bezel ring, you can determine how many minutes have passed. Isn’t it brilliant?

As I already wrote, such an element was originally intended for divers, so this type of watch is often called “diving” or “divers”. But today I will talk about another very important way to use it. The fact is that the bezel can be used to fix the time of first aid on the battlefield. If you have experience in the military field, then you know how important this moment is.

Since I have some knowledge of tactical medicine, I can say that it is very important to control the time of applying a hemostatic tourniquet or tourniquet. Although most sources write that applying it for a maximum of 1-2 hours is recommended, this is not entirely correct. Yes, the tourniquet can be kept on the injured limb for quite some time. The only condition is that every 15 minutes, for a short period, it must be loosened and tightened again (if, of course, there is such an opportunity). Otherwise, the wounded may simply lose a limb, due to the lack of blood flow to the tissues and nerve endings.

Therefore, in my opinion, the bezel can be used to track those very 15 minutes. For this:

When applying the tourniquet for the first time, turn the bezel “zero” to the minute hand.
We track the movement of the arrow, and after fifteen minutes we loosen the turnstile for a couple of seconds and tighten it again.
Again fix the bezel opposite the minute hand.
We continue until it becomes possible to apply a hemostatic pressure bandage or transfer the wounded to a field hospital.

Let’s start with several recommended parameters that a laptop should have. For efficient and productive work with graphics, fairly high computer resources are required:

First of all, this is the processing power of the processor for processing data arrays. The new chips M1, M2 show themselves ideally, but Intel i5, i7, and i9 do their job quite well.
The amount of RAM. This parameter determines how many processes can run simultaneously. I advise you to choose Mac models with RAM from 16 GB, preferably 32, or 64 GB.
The performance of the graphics adapter (video card). I note that on the latest Macbook models, the GPU is already built into the processor, but this does not mean at all that it is “weak”. On the contrary, such chips show fantastic performance in graphics processing. On older models, a discrete graphics card must be present, because only an integrated one may not be enough.
High-quality display with extended color profile. Some venerable experts may argue that the MacBook screen as a whole is not suitable for professional work. Ideally, you need a high-quality external monitor that can be configured for maximum realism in color reproduction, brightness, etc. The question is ambiguous, but I will try to answer it. Indeed, specialized equipment is required for high-precision work. For example, if you work in the field of industrial design, where the image on the display must fully correspond to the real one when printed.

On the other hand, such a perfect match is not always required. Apple laptops are equipped with displays with excellent matrices, which is more than enough for the vast majority of designers. Especially if you work in the field of web design. Therefore, you should not concentrate too much on this parameter.

The second important question newbies ask is the availability of specialized Mac software. If you previously only worked on a Windows PC, then you may have doubts about whether the macOS operating system supports your favorite programs. Everything is outrageously simple. For MacBook, there are versions of almost any professional software and plug-ins, including native ones for models with ARM chips.

At the very beginning, there are versions of the most powerful, but also expensive Macs, then more affordable and completely budget ones. Please also note that the information is current as of the end of 2022, therefore, it may change over time.

MacBook Pro 16” M1 (2021)

The largest and most productive Macbook Pro from the entire Apple line (display diagonal 16.2 inches, Liquid Retina XDR, brightness 500 nits, P3, True Tone). It is equipped with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, 16 or 32-core GPU, and has from 16 to 64 gigabytes of RAM.

MacBook Pro 14” M1 (2021)

A fairly new model that has already won the love of users. The screen size of 14.2 inches (Liquid Retina XDR, 500 nits, P3, True Tone) occupies the sweet spot between 13 and 15-inch MacBooks. Equipped with M1 Pro processor, 14 or 16-core GPU, RAM 16-32 GB. There is also an advanced version with an M1 Max chip with 24 and 32-core GPU, and RAM up to 64 GB.

MacBook Pro 13” M2 (2022)

Although the 13-inch MacBook Pro is not very popular with designers, nevertheless, this model, thanks the advanced M2 chip, can give odds to the “older brothers”. It has 10-core graphics and 16 gigabytes of memory. 13.3″ display (Retina LED-backlit, 500 nits, P3 wide color, True Tone).

MacBook Pro 15” Touch Bar (2018)

This line was produced from 2016 to 2018, and received the name “Touch Bar” for the presence of a touch panel instead of function keys. In general, there are a lot of various modifications, and all of them are suitable for professional design work. The crown jewel of the collection is the 15-inch MacBook Pro with discrete Vega graphics. Brief characteristics: Retina LED-backlit display, i9 processor, RAM from 16 to 32 GB. MacBook Pro 15” Retina (Mid 2015)

The most budget model that is still relevant is the 15-inch Macbook Pro of the Retina generation. This line was produced from 2012 to 2015. I would advise you to pay attention to the Mid 2015 version, which proved to be the most reliable. Brief parameters: Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, Radeon R9 M370X discrete graphics card.

General conclusions

The MacBook Pro (14-inch, 15-inch, 16-inch) are great laptops from Apple that are great for graphics work. The latest models based on Apple Silicon chips (M1, M2) perform especially well, but previous versions on Intel will remain relevant for a long time.

The choice of computer depends on the budget and special requirements for technology, you need to understand that you can even do simple design on a MacBook Air or a simple 13-inch MacBook Pro. However, for truly professional use, you should choose the most productive laptop with a powerful processor and GPU, and plenty of RAM. Imagine that they are unprotected in the field or in even more difficult combat conditions. How long can a fighter with cut, burned, broken hands hold out? I think the conclusions suggest themselves. Therefore, when thinking about good tactical equipment, it is necessary to pay maximum attention to the choice of good gloves. Let’s take a look at what they are.

The review should start with the type of product. In general, they can be divided into three main groups:

Full-finger gloves. Gloves that completely cover the palm and fingers.
Fingerless gloves. Gloves in which the fingers remain open.

Professional options from well-known brands are made of genuine leather, Cordura, neoprene, spandex, nylon, etc. In addition, as a rule, good gloves are made from combined materials. For example, the upper is made of breathable fabric with or without knuckle protection, the lower part is made of durable, grippy material. Protective inserts made of rubber, rubber, Kevlar, and durable plastic are widely used.

The anatomical cut of gloves is very important. That is, how comfortable they will sit on the hand, without restricting movement. Situations are common when it seems, the size is chosen correctly, but they press in some places, or vice versa, they hang on the arm. Best of all, when trying on, simulating a real application. Turn on and use Siri on your MacBook

The Siri voice assistant appeared in macOS starting with Sierra and higher. However, for some reason, it is not very popular among users. According to my theory, this is mainly because the first versions of Siri were not very functional, so everyone who tried to use the assistant before is now in no hurry to repeat the bad experience.

But there is one important note — over time, the software improves, therefore, today the functionality of the application has grown significantly. For example, now Siri is much better at distinguishing commands and executing them more accurately. Let’s see what the voice assistant can do and whether it is worth using it.

How to enable Siri on Mac?

The first thing we need to do is activate the voice assistant on macOS. Follow these instructions:

Go to “System Settings” («gear» icon).
Click on the Siri icon.
Check the box next to Turn on Ask Siri.
Next, you need to set how the voice assistant will be activated. In my opinion, this is most conveniently implemented by long-pressing a keyboard shortcut. Choose from the options provided (default Command + Space).
On MacBooks equipped with a Touch Bar, you can press a button on the panel.

Now, holding down the selected key combination, we will launch Siri into command listening mode. All results will be displayed in her helper window in the upper right corner of the screen.

On the Internet, you can find entire collections of various commands for the Apple voice assistant. You should not use only them, since Siri perfectly recognizes almost any text. All Siri functionality can be divided into the following categories: launching certain programs, working with files and folders, searching for information on a computer and on the Internet, voicing the date, time, etc. In addition, you can ask an assistant, for example, to check your email. The application works in the following way:

Press Command + Space to launch Siri (or another installed combination). Also, you can simply click on the assistant icon in the top menu bar.
We pronounce the command, for example, “start Photoshop”.
As the command is recognized, the text will appear in the window.
The function works, that is, Photoshop opens.

If you periodically turn off or restart your Apple Mac, you hear the welcome sound. This is a built-in feature of all MacBook models (iMac, Mac Pro, Mac mini) and should not cause any discomfort under normal circumstances.

But it often happens that the Mac is turned on at night or early in the morning when the rest of the family is sleeping (for example, if you are a programmer), so a loud gong that sounds throughout the house is highly undesirable. And in other cases, when working in an office or any other quiet place, you don’t want everyone to hear the sound of loading your device. Today I will tell you how to turn off or lower its volume completely.

Disable Apple Mac Boot Signal

There are two main ways to adjust the turn-on sound. The first is suitable for everyone, the second is only for those who have a version of macOS Big Sur or higher installed. So, first things first.

Method #1 (Mac Mute Mode)

To make a MacBook silent, it is enough to completely turn off the sound on it. You can do this by simply clicking on the “loudspeaker” icon in the top menu bar of the screen, or by clicking on the “Control Center”. Drag the slider to the far left with the mouse. For those who are used to using the keys on the keyboard (like myself), just press the F10 button. Pressing the key again turns on the sound.

Method #2 (Mute or Lower Volume)

The second method allows you not only to turn off the greeting signal but also to change its volume. That is, make it quiet enough. To do this, your computer must have macOS Big Sur or later installed. Instruction:

go to “System Settings” (gear icon);
select the sound icon (speaker);

at the bottom of the window, uncheck the box ” Play sound on startup”;
if you need to make the sound quieter, without unchecking the box, move the signal volume slider to the left (“-“).

Electric bike
